Machine breakdown – procedures

The bidder is responsible for ensuring that the machine uses lubricants and fuels according to the requirements specified in the contract. The contractor should conduct daily inspections of hoses and connections. The supervisor should have a routine of regularly visually inspecting exposed hoses and connections during work, especially when working around trees where the risk of dry branches causing damage to hydraulic connections exists.

The most important thing we can do is to prevent breakdowns and stay alert. If a breakdown results in the leakage of environmentally hazardous fluids, the following checklist should be followed:

  • Identify the oil leak.
  • Alert the emergency services. This depends on the amount of leaked fluid and whether it occurred on land, in water, or near a water protection area.
  • Assess the amount and type of leaked fluid, such as hydraulic oil, diesel, etcetera.
  • Stop the leak and prevent it from spreading and causing further damage.
